The retina is the delicate inner lining of the eye. It is about 1 millimeter thick and is composed of a number of layers. The retina acts like the film in a camera.
When light strikes the retina, it “takes the picture”, changing the light rays into electrical impulses, being transmitted to the brain through the optic nerve.
If any part of the delicate retina is damaged, some degree of vision will be lost .
A healthy retina is necessary for good vision.
The macula is the area in the retina responsible for central vision. It also allows recognition of fine detail and color.
A diseased macula affects both close and distance vision, and is the cause of difficulty in such activities as reading books and looking at street signs.
In order to examine the retina, an ophthalmologist will dilate your eyes with drops placed in them, during a comprehensive examination.
A retina specialist then uses a special magnifying lenses to exam your retina. The dilation will reverse after several hours.
Vitreoretinal surgeon has extensive training and experience in advanced retinal surgical techniques. Some of the surgeries and procedures we perform frequently include:
Vitrectomy with laser for retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage
Vitrectomy for diabetic retinopathy,
Vitrectomy surgery is performed to repair many diseases that affect the back of the eye including the retina, vitreous and macula. This procedure requires the removal of the liquid gel, located in the back of the eye, called the vitreous.
The procedure is performed in an operating room, under local or, in rare cases, general anaesthesia.
The most common risk following Retina surgery is an increase in the rate of cataract development. In most patients, a cataract can progress rapidly, and often becomes severe enough to require removal. Other less common complications include infection and retinal detachment. Either can occur during surgery or afterward, but both can be treated immediately.
Many people experience minor postoperative discomfort. Soreness, redness, tearing, and sensitivity to light is normal and will gradually decrease as you recover.
You may use non-aspirin analgesics and warm compresses to relieve minor discomfort.
Use prescription pain medications as instructed by your physician.
An occurrence of rapidly increasing pain is not normal. If this should happen please call us immediately and your doctor will be paged.
You may expect a gradual improvement in your vision. Immediately after surgery, your vision may be blurry, due to the gas bubble, topical eye ointment, dilation or tearing. The retina heals slowly so you should experience a slow steady progress. Four (4) weeks after surgery, the improvement should be significant. Within six (6) weeks you may be close to your final postoperative vision. However, the retina can continue to heal and vision improve for a year or more, following surgery. Do not be discouraged. Be patient and vigilant. We encourage you to evaluate your vision regularly and inform your physician if you experience any negative changes.
